For this new collectable we have used a Eastern Europe Army duffle bag. Of course in a combination with the deadstock Brown leather details. There is just one in stock of this unique bag handmade in our atelier in The Netherlands.
This backpack model is a roll-up backpack. The bag can be rolled-up to different heights and is still closable by the in height adjustable belt.
All Atelier de l’Armée bags are one of a kind, individually numbered and constructed from carefully selected materials. The distinct look of our materials can only be achieved by years of usage, therefore our bags may have stains, small repairs, errors, stamps or other natural wear. This is all part of our philosophy, it is what makes them special. Our bags are made by hand with great care for detail in our small workshop in Amsterdam. They are build to last and strong enough to hold all your belongings.

When Nigel Cabourn met the Atelier de l’Armée team back in 2013, Nigel was carrying his vintage Swiss army rucksack. With a shared passion for this amazing piece of equipment and the salt & pepper fabric it is built out of, we started talking about remaking this rucksack. After discussing we decided that we would only collaborate if we could source the original fabric to make it as close to the original as possible. Anything less wouldn’t be a tribute to the rucksack.Since it is highly unlikely to find a dead-stock roll of this 1960’s fabric we never thought the collab would actually happen. But after a year long search we were able to find a complete roll of selvage original Swiss army salt & pepper fabric and the collaboration was born: Nigel Cabourn x Atelier de l’Armée.
The Salt & Pepper fabric had a cotton base when it was developed by Swiss army during the late 1930’s, but as cotton became rare during the years of war, nettle fibre was combined with cotton. This mix created a very rugged, waterrepellent and durable fabric. The selvage roll of fabric we found contained barely enough fabric to make a limited amount of 40 pieces.
We made a limited serie of 5 bags made out of a 1920’s Japanese indigo boro kimono. Literally translated as rags or scraps of cloth, the Japanese term boro is also used to describe clothes and household items which have been patched-up and repaired many times. Once clothing was made, it would be maintained throughout the owner’s lifetime, or perhaps even longer. We carefully reworked this beautiful fabrics into a roll top back that can be rolled-up to different heights. It is still closable by the in height adjustable belt.
Please beware, raw indigo fabric is easy to bleed onto lighter materials!!
